STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC MARTTI AHTISAARI ON THE RESIGNATION OF PRESIDENT BORIS YELTSIN OF RUSSIA 31.12.1999

President Yeltsin’s era has been of historic significance. A democratic development got under way and the isolation in which Russia had languished for decades came to an end. Russia committed herself to universal values, which satisfied the preconditions for a new kind of international cooperation. It is important that reforms in Russia continue.

The transformation of Russian society also changed relations between Finland and Russia into the natural and normal interaction that exists between neighbouring countries. President Yeltsin’s personal contribution to this was of decisive importance.

I have had good personal relations with President Yeltsin and have appreciated the openness that has characterised our dealings and discussions. I have every reason to assume that our successors to be elected next year will have equally uncomplicated mutual contacts and that relations between Finland and Russia will continue to be good.
