President Niinistö meets Prime Minister of Turkey

President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö met Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Wednesday, 6 November at Mäntyniemi.

President Niinistö and Prime Minister Erdoğan discussed relations between Finland and Turkey, and Turkey’s EU membership process. The discussions also focused on regional issues, such as the civil war in Syria and the situation in Egypt.

The President and Prime Minister agreed that relations between Finland and Turkey are excellent. President Niinistö congratulated the Republic of Turkey on its 90th anniversary, and noted that next year will also mark the 90th anniversary of relations between Finland and Turkey. The President also reaffirmed Finland’s support for Turkey’s EU membership process and the reforms that membership will require.

During his visit, Prime Minister Erdoğan also met Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen, the Speaker of the Finnish Parliament Eero Heinäluoma, and representatives of Finnish enterprises.
