President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö talked with US President-elect Donald Trump on the telephone on Thursday, 8 December 2016. Topics of discussion included relations between Finland and the United States, Russia, and the Arctic Council whose presidency will be transferred from the United States to Finland in spring 2017. President Niinistö and President-elect Trump also discussed Finland’s independence jubilee year. President-elect Trump asked President Niinistö to extend his greetings to Finland, saying that the Finns are great people.
