President Niinistö to make official visit to Norway

President of the Republic of Finland Sauli Niinistö will make an official visit to Norway on 21–22 April 2022.

The visit will begin on Thursday, 21 April at the annual seminar of the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, the topic being the implications of growing geopolitical tensions for European and Nordic security. President Niinistö and Prime Minister of Norway Jonas Gahr Støre are the keynote speakers at the seminar.

After the seminar, President Niinistö will meet King Harald V of Norway at the Royal Palace. In addition, the President will visit the Norwegian Parliament, the Storting, where he will hold discussions with President of the Storting Masud Gharahkhani and the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence.

President Niinistö will hold bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Gahr Støre at the Prime Minister’s official residence on Thursday evening. Topics will include Russia’s warfare in Ukraine, the future of the European security order, and cooperation between Finland and Norway in foreign, security and defence policy. Following their discussions, the President and the Prime Minister will hold a joint press conference.

On Friday, 22 April, President Niinistö will have meetings with Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anniken Huitfeldt and Minister of Defence Odd Roger Enoksen. In addition, President Niinistö will give the opening speech at an event organised by the Confederation of Finnish Industries and the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise, which will address the growth opportunities of the green transition. Minister for Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Ville Skinnari, who will participate in the visit as part of President Niinistö’s delegation, will also speak at the event.
