President Niinistö to make state visit to Latvia

President of the Republic of Finland Sauli Niinistö and his spouse will make a state visit to Latvia on 9–11 September 2013. President Niinistö will be having a discussion with Andris Berzins, President of Latvia. The programme will also include meetings with Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis and with Solvita Aboltinas, Speaker of Parliament.

The discussions will focus on bilateral relations between Finland and Latvia, Eastern partnership, topical security policy issues as well as the situation in the Eurozone, as Latvia will be adopting the euro at the beginning of 2014. Also regional issues such as transport, energy and Baltic Sea cooperation are likely to be discussed.

The President’s delegation will include Jan Vapaavuori, Minister of Economic Affairs, and a delegation of business leaders. A Finnish-Latvian economic summit will be held in connection with the state visit.

Mrs Jenni Haukio, the spouse of the President of the Republic, will have a separate programme including visits to cultural sites and meeting with representatives of Latvian culture sector.

On the final day of the state visit, the President and his spouse will visit Jelgava to attend the opening of the Fortum power plant and to visit the university.
