President Niinistö to meet heads of EU institutions in Brussels

President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö will visit Brussels on 21–22 January to meet the heads of various EU institutions. The programme will include meetings with Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, and Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament.

In addition, President Niinistö will meet Commission Vice-President Jyrki Katainen, as well as Ilkka Salmi, Director of the EU Intelligence Analysis Centre, and Georgij Alafuzoff, Director of the Intelligence Directorate of the European Union Military Staff.

The meetings will cover topical foreign and security policy issues in particular, including relations with Russia, the situation in Ukraine, the development of the EU’s common security and defence policy, and terrorism.

In addition, President Niinistö will attend a reception hosted by Finland’s Permanent Representation to the European Union, to meet Finns working in EU institutions.

This will be President Niinistö’s first visit to Brussels during his term of office.
