Statement by President of the Republic of Finland Sauli Niinistö at the opening of the Finland Forward campaign on 17 April 2020

At the beginning of the current year, nobody could foresee where we would be in just a couple of months. We have faced the impossible. And it is far from over yet. But this diabolic thing can be beaten, we will vanquish it.

We all pay a part in this. A great deal depends on how we behave physically. Whether we follow the instructions and comply with the rules. No doubt, there is also anxiety and mental pressure. To deal with it, it is important to control oneself, remain calm.

It all adds up to self-restraint. This way, we can protect ourselves, while at the same time protecting those around us. And above all, by doing so we show respect for those who look after us – the healthcare staff and all the people who work in service professions.

But brighter times lie ahead. If and when we overcome this impossible, it is worth remembering that for those who conquer the impossible, everything is possible – all the good things that life has to offer.

I wish you all strength and resilience – and let us not forget self-restraint. What it boils down to is respect for others.
