President of the Republic Tarja Halonen sent a message of congratulation to Mr Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007.

President Halonen said in her message that she is very pleased to see that the pioneering work in the area of climate change has been recognised in such an honourable way.

”Well-being for mankind and nature go hand in hand. Sustainable development on a global scale can become a reality if we take true care of people and if we have a strong environmental awareness. There are positive signs of attitudes changing and of a stronger common will to act on climate issues”, President Halonen wrote in her message of congratulation to Mr Al Gore and Dr R.K. Pachauri, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The annual Delhi Sustainable Development Summit, DSDS, was set up on the initiative of Chairman Pachauri. President Halonen is a patron of the Summit and has actively participated in the work of this organisation. Chairman Pachauri and President Halonen last met in connection with the UN High-Level Event on Climate Change in New York, September 2007.
