President of the Republic Tarja Halonen appointed Finland’s 70th Government headed by Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen in the Presidential session of the Government on Thursday 19 April 2007. Immediately afterwards, the new Government held its first plenary session. This was followed by a complimentary call to the Presidential Palace by both the outgoing and incoming Governments. In her speech to the incoming Government, President Halonen made a special note that the Government is the first Government of Finland in which women are in the majority. “When I opened this year’s session of Parliament I said that I would follow with interest how the strong representation of women influences the content of politics. And now it has certainly influenced."
President Halonen noted that there will be international and national challenges in the future also. “The objectives of Government programme include the prevention of environmental problems, responding to the challenges of an ageing population, increasing the employment rate and contributing to success in international competition.” President Halonen also said that she firmly believes that cooperation with the new Government will go smoothly.
Outgoing Government Thanked
President Halonen thanked the outgoing Government for its excellent cooperation. The Presidency of the EU required long working days and good cooperation with European colleagues. According to President Halonen, the work of the Government was highly appreciated in the EU and further afield. “I thank you, Prime Minister, and each member of the Government, for the responsible and successful work it has done for the nation”, President Halonen stated.
