STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC ON THE RESULT OF THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN RUSSIA

The two elections held in the Russian Federation in the space of only a brief period demonstrate that democracy is working. Their results are enhancing political stability in Russia and make it possible to continue with reforms in society.

I congratulate Vladimir Putin on his election as President of the Russian Federation. He has affirmed that he will continue the process of social reform in Russia and strive for cooperation with the EU and other international actors. I hope that clarification of the political situation will promote progress towards finding a peaceful solution in Chechnya.
