President Halonen in Brussels: Finland supports Ban Ki-moon’s re-election

Finland supports the re-election of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, said President of the Republic Tarja Halonen at a press conference in Brussels on 8 June 2011. President Halonen was in Brussels to meet Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, and José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission. The talks focused especially on development.

At the meetings President Halonen talked of the work of the UN High-level Panel on Global Sustainability, which she co-chairs.

President Barroso voiced his strong support to the work of the UN Panel and deemed the establishment of the Panel both important and positive. At the press conference for the meeting both President Halonen and President Barroso expressed their support to the re-election of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Economic growth and social justice

On Tuesday, 7 June 2011 President Halonen and President of the Council of Europe Herman Van Rompuy met for talks on sustainable development. Both President Halonen and President Van Rompuy emphasised the importance of social justice as a companion to economic growth, with respect to which President Van Rompuy mentioned the Europe 2020 strategy.

Other topics featured at the meeting included the government negotiations in Finland as well as current international affairs, including the situation in northern Africa.

President Van Rompuy was also interested in hearing President Halonen’s views in the run-up to the EU–Russia Summit, which is to be organised in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia on 9–10 June.

YK:n kestävän kehityksen paneeliThe programme of President Halonen also included meetings with Janez Potočnik, European Commissioner for the Environment, and Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action.

President Halonen also took part in a panel discussion on the green economy and sustainable development organised by the European Policy Centre. The speakers included Climate Action Commissioner Connie Hedegaard, who serves as a member on the UN High-level Panel on Global Sustainability co-chaired by President Halonen.
