President Halonen to meet the President of the UN General Assembly

President of the Republic Tarja Halonen will hold talks with the President of the UN General Assembly, Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, on Monday, 23 February 2009 at her official residence in Mäntyniemi. The main subject will be the financial crisis and its global effects.

Last October President d'Escoto appointed a high-level Commission of Experts on Reforms of the International Monetary and Financial System. The Commission will complete its report this spring. Its work has been coordinated by Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz, who also participated in the ILO World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization. President Halonen served as co-chair on that commission.

President d'Escoto will arrive in Finland from Damascus. In Finland he will meet President Halonen and then continue to Beijing, Manama, Geneva, Teheran and London.

Miguel d'Escoto is the President of the 63rd session of the United Nations General Assembly. He took up this post last September. Mr d'Escoto is from Nicaragua, where he served for many years as Minister for Foreign Affairs. He is currently Senior Adviser on Foreign Affairs to President Daniel Ortega.
