President Vaira Vike-Freiberga of Latvia made a state visit to Finland together with her spouse professor Imants Freibergs on 24 – 26 April 2006. The official reception ceremonies and the talks between the Presidents of Latvia and Finland were held at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday 25 April. Presidents Halonen and Vike-Freiberga focused on bilateral relations between Finland and Latvia, Finland’s coming EU Presidency and EU’s future. The Presidents discussed also relations between EU and Russia and issues concerning the Baltic Sea.
President Vike-Freiberga laid a wreath on the heroes’ graves in Hietaniemi Cemetery and gave a lecture at the University of Helsinki. President Vike-Freiberga’s programme included also a visit to Parliament and a trip to Porvoo. President Vike-Freibergan was accompanied by Latvian Business Delegation. Finnish-Latvian Business Forum was arranged on 26 April, and it was attended by the both Presidents.
