President Halonen's congratulations to President Obama for the Nobel Peace Prize

Office of the President of the RepublicPress Release 9.10.2009

President of the Republic Tarja Halonen is delighted to congratulate President Barack Obama on winning the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

President Halonen considers that President Obama has brought to international politics a long-awaited turn towards a new kind of dialogue and multilateral cooperation. This was also highlighted at the UN General Assembly in September.

"Global problems require global solutions. Multilateral negotiations particularly through the UN are vital to achieve a new climate agreement. They are also needed in striving for a world free of nuclear weapons and in strengthening development, democracy and human rights," President Halonen says.

"I hope that the Peace Prize awarded to President Obama will encourage all of us to work together and bear our responsibility for resolving global problems."
