President of the Republic Tarja Halonen will travel to New York for the opening of the 62st session of the UN General Assembly on 23-27 September 2007. President Halonen heads the Finnish delegation to the General Assembly, which also includes Minister for Foreign Affairs Ilkka Kanerva. President Halonen will deliver Finland´s address at the opening of the session on Wednesday 26 September. On 24 September, prior to the opening session of the General Assembly, President Halonen will participate in a high-level climate meeting hosted by the UN Secretary-General. President Halonen will give Finland’s national address in a session on technology and will also co-chair a session on combating climate change.
In connection with the opening of the General Assembly, President Halonen will attend a reception hosted by President of the United States George W. Bush and take part in the Clinton Global Initiative event arranged by former President Bill Clinton. President Halonen's programme during the week will also include bilateral meetings, including one with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.
Dr Pentti Arajärvi accompanies the President to New York, and will attend the spouses programme of the UN week.
