President of Lithuania in Finland for a working visit

Energy issues, Baltic Sea cooperation and EU matters, particularly the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, were on the agenda in talks between President of the Republic Tarja Halonen and President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaité at the Presidential Palace on 7 October 2009. Both President Halonen and President Grybauskaité noted that bilateral relations between Finland and Lithuania are good. They could be even closer, however."Particularly in the field of sustainable energy and in issues concerning transparency and good governance, Lithuania can learn a lot from Finland," President Grybauskaité said. She also emphasized cooperation with the Nordic countries. President Halonen pointed out that the significance of regional strategies within the EU has grown. She underlined good cooperation with Lithuania in the EU and in international organizations such as the UN. The joint press conference of the visit is available as a video recording.

President Grybauskaité, who took office in July, is on a two-day working visit to Finland. Cooperation between President Halonen and President Grybauskaité has started at a good pace, since this is their third meeting this year. They talked with each other last summer at Lithuania's Millennium celebration in Vilnius and in September at the opening of the UN General Assembly in New York.

During her working visit President Grybauskaité also met with Speaker of Parliament Sauli Niinistö and Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen and visited the Mannerheim Museum.
