Päivi Kairamo-Hella appointed secretary general at the Office of the President of the Republic

On Friday, 9 January 2009 President Tarja Halonen appointed Diplomatic Adviser Päivi Kairamo-Hella to the post of Secretary General at the Office of the President of the Republic.

Ms Kairamo-Hella, who has a Master of Laws degree, has served as the President's Diplomatic Adviser since 2005. Before that she worked as an Administrator for the European Commission and as a Counsellor at Finland's Permanent Representation to the European Union in Brussels. She has also worked as Committee Counsel at the Parliament of Finland, Commercial Counsellor at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Government Secretary at the Ministry of Labour.

Ms Kairamo-Hella will begin her new job on 1 March 2009, when Secretary General Jarmo Viinanen will move to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. He will start work as head of Finland's Permanent Mission to the UN in New York on 1 April 2009.

Mr Viinanen has served as Secretary General since 2005 and was the President's Diplomatic Adviser from 2000 to 2005. He has worked at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs since 1988, where he has held a number of posts including Adviser to the Minister for Foreign Affairs.
