Discussions between Finland, Sweden and Turkey in Brussels on 20 June 2022

On Monday 20 June 2022, the NATO headquarters in Brussels hosted discussions between senior officials from Finland, Sweden and Turkey. The talks focused on Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO membership, an opening of accession talks and the security concerns raised by Turkey.

The Finnish delegation, including representation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was led by Petri Hakkarainen, Director of Foreign and Security Policy in the Office of the President of the Republic of Finland.

“The discussion went on for nearly five hours in total. Clear progress has been made on some issues, while others still have some way to go towards an agreement. The results of today’s talks will now be reviewed in each of the three capitals. The common goal is to continue the discussions as soon as possible,” Hakkarainen said.

The previous meeting of representatives from Finland, Sweden and Turkey was held in Ankara on 25 May 2022.
