In their meeting on Friday 13 June, the President of the Republic and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy discussed the current state of the Ukraine peace negotiations, proposals to achieve peace and bring an end to Russia’s unlawful war of aggression, and support for Ukraine.
The President and the Ministerial Committee also outlined Finland’s positions for the NATO Summit to be held in The Hague on 24–25 June. The aim of the summit is to significantly strengthen NATO’s deterrence and defence capabilities, for example through a new defence spending target. To respond to the threat posed by Russia, Europe is increasingly investing in measures to ensure its own security.
The President and the Ministerial Committee discussed Israel’s extensive attacks on Iran last night, which have also led to counter-attacks by Iran on Israel. Finland calls for an immediate cessation of this military escalation, which poses a threat to stability throughout the Middle East.
The President and the Ministerial Committee were briefed on the current situation in Israel and Palestine and on the UN conference on the two-state solution to be held on 17–20 June in New York.
The President and the Ministerial Committee were also presented with the Security Committee’s annual report on the security of society.
In addition, the President and the Ministerial Committee discussed the situation of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the development of bilateral defence cooperation between Finland and the United States.
