Presidential couple of Iceland on state visit in Finland


President of the Republic of Iceland, Halla Tómasdóttir, accompanied by her spouse Björn Skúlason, paid a state visit to Finland from 7 to 8 October 2025 at the invitation of President of the Republic of Finland Alexander Stubb and his spouse Suzanne Innes-Stubb.

The two-day visit focused on the bilateral relations between Finland and Iceland, Nordic and other regional cooperation, issues relating to the Arctic, as well as support for Ukraine.

The Icelandic presidential couple was welcomed to Finland at an official ceremony held at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki on Tuesday 7 October 2025. Upon arrival in the palace courtyard, the national anthems of Finland and Iceland were played. President Stubb and President Tómasdóttir then inspected the guard of honour. Following this, the Presidents greeted the members of the delegations from both countries.

The official delegation discussions covered, among other matters, bilateral relations between the two countries, issues relating to the Arctic, and Russia’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine.

During the state visit, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir and Minister of Defence of Finland Antti Häkkänen signed a Memorandum of Understanding between Finland and Iceland on bilateral defence cooperation.

Business, education, and culture

On the second day of the state visit, the presidential couples visited Nokia Executive Experience Center, Junior Achievement Finland’s learning centre (JA Yrityskylä) and Aalto University in Espoo, as well as the Museum of Architecture & Design in Helsinki.

At Nokia Executive Experience Center in Espoo,  the Presidents were introduced to Nokia’s innovations and participated in a business seminar bringing together Finnish and Icelandic companies in the energy, gaming and technology industries

The programme then continued at JA Finland’s Yrityskylä Learning Environment. This award-winning concept that provides sixth- and ninth-grade students with practical experience of working life, economics, entrepreneurship, and society.

In the afternoon, the presidential couples visited Aalto University and the Aalto Design Factory, a center that promotes multidisciplinary product development. The presidents also engaged in a discussion with students about leadership in a changing world order.

The last destination on Wednesday was the Architecture and Design Museum, where the presidents of Iceland and Finland and their spouses toured the exhibition Escape to Moominvalley. The exhibition reflects reality as seen through the imagination of Tove Jansson, resulting in the creation of Moominvalley, a refuge from the turbulent world for herself and her readers.
